Discovering the ancient centre of Pulsano (TA)
Discover the historical places of Pulsano, the land of Ionic coast dating back to the Bronze Age and the destination of summer residences since Roman times due to the crystalline Mediterranean Sea.
Choose the tour of Pulsano, an ancient centre close to a crystalline sea and with oldest origins dating back to the Bronze Age. A leap back in the history takes us to the birth of the settlement, when the enemies who came from the Gulf of Taranto forced the inhabitants to settle in a sentinel position, further from the coast and 37 metres above sea level.
The tour inside its village tells us the story of battles and raids, starting from his great symbol of defence: you will enter the Castle De Falconibus walls, a superb construction with its different towers among them for shape and height, from which you can see the sea and touch with your hands the signs of a bygone age, when it was a military fortress and, in the XVI century, became Manor House.
The tour continues to discover the remains of the ancient fortress, such as the Keep, a Renaissance fortress with a cylindrical shape and crenelated frame, up to the Scoppetta Mill, an exceptional example of industrial archaeology, the only Italian example of a cylindrical-shaped mill where you can see all the machineries for the milling of the wheat and the production of the flour.
By moving away from the ancient hamlet and crossing charming alleys rich in identity, you arrive to the Convent of the Reformed Fathers which hosts the MAP- Archaeological Museum of Pulsano, where you can see the prehistorical artefacts and the domains of the Greeks and Romans which are interesting for the territory. In the tour you can see all the beauty of the god Silvan in marble, found in archaeological excavations on the Pulsano coast, in the so-called “Torre Castelluccia”.
Pulsano is also a home of century-old traditions and several places of Christian faith referred to the Marian cult, such as the Mother Church “Santa Maria La Nova” and its high bell tower, among the symbols of Pulsano. Furthermore, you can enter the Holiest Sacrament Church, home of the same Confraternity, and the Purgatory Church, home of the Archconfraternity of Carmine and where the fascinating Rites of the Holy Week take place every year, an event in which the people of Pulsano takes part in secular processions with the statues of “Misteries” by the great artistic value.
