On the path toward the Castle of Libohova and the famous Saint Mary’s Church at Labova e Kryqit
Labova e Kryqit and Libohova are practically part of the same neighborhood! Thus, their distances from from each other are comfortable for half a day tour. The famous Church of Saint Mary and the Castle of Libohova await for your visit!
One cannot miss a visit at the impressive historic town of Libohova and its magnificent castle. Once built as a dowry for the sister of the local ruler Ali Pasha, it overlooks the Drino valley and serves as a communication and observation point. The town of Libohova apart from the Castle offers the possibility of a nice pause under the centuries old shades of the Platanus trees. According to many foreign travelers, who have visited Libohova, its castle and residence complex were built by Ali Pasha of Tepelena in honor of his sister Shanisha. Their construction certainly indicates the increasing importance of the city over the valley second after Gjirokastra as a point which controlled very well the passage of the valley especially its southern side. On the other hand, Labova e Kryqit and its homonymous church are 20 minutes’ drive from Libohova. A nice scenic road leads up the mountain side and as you approach the village, the image of the church immediately attracts your attention. The village of Labova e Kryqit is deeply positioned into the northern slope of Bureto mountain, which raises behind the village like in an ancient theater setting. The focus of the visit when one arrives in Labova e Kryqit is the Saint Mary church, with its great cupola clearly visible approaching the village. Between the large cypress trees and the surrounding stone walls it invites you inside. The church certainly astonishes even the most reluctant visitor with its elegant volumes and the exceptional richness of its exterior decorations with reddish tiles. |
